ARCHIVED: What are the best uses for an IU RFS account?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.
Note:
The Indiana University Research File System (RFS) will be decommissioned the week of January 2, 2017. Most RFS accounts (with few exceptions) are now read-only. For details, see ARCHIVED: About the retirement of the Research File System at IU.

The RFS is primarily intended as a work space for IU researchers. RFS is best suited for storing:

  • Relatively small files
  • Files that you update or access frequently
  • Files you need to share with fellow researchers (e.g., group project work)

Do not use the RFS for storing backups, concurrently updated files (e.g., Access databases), or relational database (e.g., MySQL or Postgres databases).

Also, do not use the RFS for long-term, archival storage of research data. Use the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA) instead.

Important:
Before storing data on the SDA, make sure you understand the information in Types of sensitive institutional data appropriate for UITS Research Technologies services.

If you have questions, email Research Storage.
