At IU, how do I change the default privacy relationships in Skype for Business/Lync?

Use Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync to access Indiana University's UniCom service.

Important:
As of January 22, 2017, Lync 2010 for Windows no longer works with IU's UniCom service. Windows users at IU should switch to either Skype for Business/Lync 2013, which is available from IUware as part of the Office 2013 suite), or Skype for Business 2016, which is available as an Office 365 ProPlus app. For more, see About the migration from Lync to Skype for Business.

At Indiana University, by default, everyone in the Global Address List (GAL) and all federated contacts are given a privacy relationship of Colleagues to you. In Skype for Business/Lync, the Colleagues relationship shares your presence information along with your contact information, except for Home, Mobile Phone, and Meeting details. See In Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync, what are privacy relationships?

If you want to block this information by default for all people in the GAL and federated contacts, you must change the default privacy relationship, as described below.

Note:
You cannot do this in Lync for Mac; however, you can access the Windows Lync client using IUanyWare, and follow the instructions below. The changes you make will then apply in your Lync for Mac client as well.
  1. In the Windows Skype for Business/Lync client, in the tab bar, click the down arrow to see the View more layout options drop-down menu.
  2. Check Manage Privacy Relationships.
  3. You will see a new contact in your "External Contacts" group, called People in domains connected with my company. Right-click it to choose a different default privacy setting for people in the GAL. To see the different privacy levels described, see In Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync, what are privacy relationships?

To learn how to perform common tasks in the Skype for Business/Lync client, see the UniCom page. Also, see Microsoft's Skype for Business help pages or the Lync for Mac user guide.

For an introduction to UniCom, including how-to PDFs and videos, see UniCom.
