Hide your IU List subscription from other list subscribers

Important:
Indiana University will be transitioning to a single email domain, iu.edu, between now and the end of 2025. For more about the transition, see One Mail. For details about the impact to IU List specifically, see Changes to IU List from the One Mail initiative. For general actions you may need to take, see Prepare for One Mail at IU.

Before you begin

On IU List, some lists allow subscribers to review the list of subscribers, while others restrict review to owners or list administrators. If a list you're subscribed to is set to allow subscribers to view the roster, you can hide yourself from other list subscribers. However, owners may have access to the full list roster.

If you have already subscribed and posted to the list, be warned that this option does not change access to other information, such as the list archives. If the list owner has chosen to make the web archives public, your subscriber information may still be visible as part of that archive, or as part of replies in that archive.

Use the web interface

  1. Log into the campus IU List website for your list:
    Campus IU List web interface
    IU Bloomington https://list.indiana.edu/
    IUPUI https://list.iupui.edu/
    IU East https://list.iue.edu/
    IU Kokomo https://list.iuk.edu/
    IU Northwest https://list.iun.edu/
    IU South Bend https://list.iusb.edu/
    IU Southeast https://list.ius.edu/
    IUPUC https://list.iupuc.edu/
    University-wide https://list.iu.edu/
  2. Select My lists, and choose the name of a list.

  3. In the left menu, under "List Options", click Subscriber options.
  4. Change your visibility to Concealed or Listed, and then click Apply modifications. This setting only applies to the list you have selected.

Use email commands

When using email commands, send email from the address you're subscribed under to the campus IU List administrative address (for example, list@iupui.edu).

  • When sending a single command, put it in the subject line of the message, and leave the body blank.

  • When sending multiple commands in a single email message:

    • Leave the subject line blank and put all the commands in the email body.
    • Put every command on a new line.
    • Send your message in plain text, not in HTML (no formatting).
    • Don't include anything in the body other than IU List commands; do not include a signature block.

To conceal your name from the list, send the following command:

SET listname CONCEAL

To undo this:

SET listname UNCONCEAL

To change the status on all lists at that campus, use the commands:

SET * CONCEAL

SET * UNCONCEAL

For more email commands, see Submit IU List commands via email.
