Subscribe to an IU List mailing list

Important:

Overview

You can subscribe yourself to many IU List mailing lists using the web interface or email commands. However, some lists may require list owners to subscribe you, or to approve your subscription. Other lists may allow you to subscribe yourself via email commands, but may not be visible in the list index, or may not allow non-subscribers to view the list information page, which allows you to subscribe yourself via the web interface. Subscribe to one list via email

To add yourself to a mailing list, send an email message to the list's subscription address (not the main list address). The message can be blank.

Send mail to listname-l-subscribe@campus.edu, replacing listname with the name of the list to which you wish to subscribe, for example:

folkdance-l-subscribe@indiana.edu
Note:
The campus domain of the subscription address matches the campus domain of the list (not necessarily your campus or your primary email address); thus, to subscribe to listname-l@iu.edu, you would send mail to listname-l-subscribe@iu.edu.

Subscribe to multiple lists via email

To add yourself to multiple lists at one campus, send an email message to the campus's command address (for example, list@indiana.edu, list@iupui.edu, etc.).

Note:

When sending multiple commands in a single email message:

  • Leave the subject line blank and put all the commands in the email body.
  • Put every command on a new line.
  • Send your message in plain text, not in HTML (no formatting).
  • Don't include anything in the body other than IU List commands; do not include a signature block.

Use commands in the following format; name is optional.

SUBSCRIBE listname name
SUBSCRIBE listname2 name

Subscribe via the web interface

You can also manage your list subscriptions through the IU List web interface.

  1. Go to the website for the campus where the list is hosted (not necessarily your home campus):

  2. Click Search for List(s), and search for a list by name. To browse, from the Search for List(s) menu at the top of the page, click Index of Lists or Browse lists by categories.
  3. Click the name of the list.
  4. In the left pane, click Subscribe.
  5. Enter your email address and name in the corresponding boxes, and click I subscribe to list [listname].
  6. Click Confirm.
  7. You may receive an email message asking you to click a link to confirm your subscription. If you do, click the link and then click Confirm.
