ARCHIVED: In Oncourse Lessons (beta), how do I add a forum topic to a page?

Note:
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?

You can add a forum topic from the Forums tool to a page in Lessons (beta). For more about Forums, see ARCHIVED: Forums.

Note: You can only add forum topics to a Lessons page, not entire forums.

Adding a forum topic

To add an existing forum topic to a Lessons page, at the top of the Lessons page, click More Tools and then Add Forum Topic. You'll see a list of forum topics already created in the Forums tool. Select the one you wish to add, and click Use selected item.

To create a new topic from within Lessons (beta):

  1. At the top of the Lessons page, click More Tools and then Add Forum Topic.
  2. At the top of the page, click Create new topic using Forums.
  3. You can then create a new topic or modify an existing one just as you would in the Forums tool. (For more, see ARCHIVED: Creating new forums and topics.)
  4. When you are ready to add the new topic to your Lessons page, at the top, click Continue with Add Forum Topic, after you have created the new topic.
  5. You'll return to the list of topics; select the topic you just created and then click Use selected item.

Editing a forum topic

To set the properties of the forum topic as it pertains to your Lessons page:

  1. Click Edit to the left of the topic you would like to modify.
  2. In the "Edit Item" box, you can modify any of the following:
    • Item Name: Change the name of the text on the link to your topic on the main Lessons page.
    • Item Description: Add or change a description of your topic, which will appear beneath the link to the topic.
    • Change Forum Topic: Change the topic to a different one in the Forums tool.
    • Edit Forum Topic: Open the Forums tool to modify the settings for the topic.
    • Don't Release Item Until All Prerequisites are Completed: Select this option to make the topic available only after previously required items have been completed.
    • Require that the student submit a posting to this topic: Select this option if students must complete this item before progressing in a Lessons plan.
    • Edit the groups for which this topic should be shown: Allows you to make this topic visible only to certain groups or sections if they are defined for the site. See ARCHIVED: Managing groups.
  3. To save your changes, click Update Item. To remove the topic from your Lessons page, click Delete.

    Note: Two topics with the same name in two different forums are not the same topic. Changes made to a topic in one forum will not appear in a topic with the same name in another forum; a given topic in one forum does not automatically link to a topic of the same name in a different forum if the first forum is deleted.
