As a faculty member or an assigned delegate, how do I add and maintain class descriptions?

If you are an instructor or assigned delegate, you can add and maintain class descriptions for your courses via the Manage Class Descriptions application.

On this page:

Adding a new class description

  1. Go to Manage Class Descriptions (Instructors) in One.IU, and click Start.
  2. If you teach on multiple campuses, select the Campus and Term for the appropriate class. If you are a delegate, you will see the courses for which you are assigned. If you are assigned as a delegate for more than one faculty member, you will see their names listed on the page. Click the faculty member's name to update the appropriate class description.
  3. In the "Class" column, click the appropriate class number.
  4. To copy a previous class description, click View My Inventory. To add a new class description, skip to step 7 below.
    Note:
The inventory will include only descriptions entered into this system. It will not include descriptions used in the past.
  5. To view the descriptions you have on file, next to the correct class, click view.
    Note:
The "Last Updated" information is displayed at the top of the page. It lists the IU username of the person who last updated the class description, as well as a date and time stamp of when it was updated.
  6. Click Copy at the bottom of the page. This will copy the class information and allow you to edit it.
  7. Under "Class Description", enter or review the class description. Students will be able to perform a keyword search on the class description.
  8. Note:

Consider adding information to your class description that would be helpful to students, such as:

    • Class workload: How many papers, exams, and projects are required? What are the weekly reading or homework requirements? How are assignments weighted? Students can use this information to ensure they are building a balanced, realistic, and manageable schedule for the semester.
    • Additional requirements: Are there out-of-class events or required activities that will take additional time and/or involve extra expenses?
    • Group work: Is group work required? How much of the grade depends on it? How are group work grades assigned per student?
    • Class topics: Especially when the course title is vague or generic, any additional information about what will be covered in the class can help.
  9. Under "Search Tag", enter or review the search tags. Students will be able to perform a keyword search on the search tags.
  10. Under "Class Webpage/URL", enter or review the URL to your class web page.
  11. Under "Bibliography", enter or review the bibliography information.
  12. If you would like to display the information to students, click the Display to Students checkbox. Students will be able to use the class descriptions when searching and registering for classes.
  13. Click Save. You can return to the class description application at any point to modify the description.

Viewing a class description

  1. Go to Faculty Center (SIS) in One.IU, and click Start.
  2. Click the Search for Classes tab, enter the class information, and then click Search.
  3. Locate the correct class, and click Details. The faculty-provided description, bibliography, and search tags will appear at the bottom of the page.

Assigning a Delegate

  1. Go to Manage Class Descriptions (Instructors) in One.IU, and click Start.
  2. If you teach on multiple campuses, select the Campus and Term for the appropriate class.
  3. In the far right column, click the Delegate link for a specific class. If there is a previously assigned delegate, the delegate's Employee ID, Network ID, and Name will display. In the "Delegate Employee ID" field, enter the 10-digit Employee ID of the delegate you would like to add, and then click Add.
  4. Click Save.
Note:
You may delete a delegate at any time by clicking Delete in the far left column. You may have more than one delegate.
