ARCHIVED: Use facet limits to narrow your IUCAT search results

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

If your IUCAT search finds too many results, you can narrow it with facets. Facets represent different characteristics of a resource, for example, format or language. You can apply facets in both basic and advanced searches.

Note: You can also focus your search with Boolean operators; see Narrow your IUCAT search results

About facets

Facet links appear along the left side of the search screen, as shown below. Expand a facet by clicking the + (plus sign) next to its category name. You can use as many as you wish of the available facets:

  • Format
  • Publication Year
  • Author
  • Subject
  • Language
  • Call Number
  • Campus
  • Library
  • Collection

Using facets in basic search

If you're using the main IUCAT screen, select facets either before typing search terms into the search box, or after clicking search. Any terms you've typed into the search box will be lost when you select a facet, but selecting a facet after searching will automatically rerun the search with that facet applied.

The facets you apply are listed under the search bar. Click the X next to an individual facet to remove it from your search.

Using facets in advanced search

In advanced searches, check the box of any facet you wish to apply, either before or after entering your search terms. You can also apply facets from the search results screen.
