About student data classified as Restricted or Critical at IU

At Indiana University, official classifications of institutional data are defined in Management of Institutional Data (DM-01). Sensitive data elements are classified as Restricted or Critical, and are protected by federal and state laws, and by IU policy.

Many common types of student data at IU, including class rosters, class schedules, and grade information, are classified as Restricted or Critical. Student data elements are classified as Restricted or Critical regardless of their source. Student data may be classified as Restricted or Critical whether it is generated at a department level or stored in SIS.

For more about the official classifications of institutional data at IU, see Classification levels of institutional data. For help identifying the official IU classification level of a student data element, plus information about how it should be stored and managed, use the Data Sharing and Handling (DSH) tool. (There are two student data domains; make sure to review both.)
