Overview

Under IU's contract with Adobe, Creative Cloud eligibility is limited to currently enrolled students, current faculty, current staff, and certain affiliates.

To continue using Adobe products that require a license after you leave IU, you must purchase your own retail license. You will receive an academic discount if you purchase your license before leaving the university.

Students who are graduating or otherwise leaving Indiana University have two options for keeping their Adobe files:

  • Option one: You can manually download and store your Adobe files. Storage options include a hard drive or a subscription cloud storage service. If you opt to store your files in cloud storage, make sure to use a personal account and not an account associated with IU (for example, your Microsoft OneDrive at IU account).
  • Option two: You can transfer your Adobe files from your IU account to a free personal Adobe account using Adobe's Student Asset Migration Portal. You can use an existing personal Adobe account, or the migration portal will create one for you before the migration process begins.
    Note:

Free Adobe accounts do not have access to any Creative Cloud apps or services (for instance, Photoshop or Illustrator). Even if you use the migration portal, you will still lose access to your Creative Cloud apps or services after you leave IU. To use these apps and services via your personal Adobe account, you will need to purchase a Creative Cloud plan. While using Adobe's Student Asset Migration Portal, you will be offered a 40% discount on Creative Cloud individual plan licenses. These plans are billed monthly, and the discount will last for the first year after graduation.

Before you begin

Read this information before you use the Adobe Student Asset Migration Portal.

Important:
  • If you are transferring your Adobe files to an existing Adobe account, you must verify that the existing account does not contain any other Adobe materials. The migration portal will not work if your personal Adobe account contains any other content.
  • If you are leaving the United States, UITS highly recommends that you use the migration portal before you leave the country. Adobe files created in a particular country must be transferred to a personal Adobe account that was created in the same country.

Storage limitations

At IU, you may store up to 100 GB of files in your Adobe account. Although Adobe's free personal accounts can only store up to 2 GB of data, you can transfer all assets in your IU account to your free account even if they exceed 2 GB (some Adobe files cannot be transferred; see Transfer limitations). However, if you migrate more than 2 GB of data, you will not be able to add additional assets to your free account. Therefore, you may want to either remove files from your IU account until you're under the 2 GB threshold, or store extra files in a separate location.

To see how much space you're using in your IU Adobe account:

  1. Go to Creative Cloud Assets page.
  2. Enter your IU email address ending in @iu.edu, and choose Continue.
  3. Select Company or School Account.
  4. If prompted, log in with your IU username and passphrase.

The amount of space you're using will be listed at the lower left.

Transfer limitations

Certain types of Adobe assets, including shared files and URLs, will not be transferred to your free personal Adobe account. For a complete list of Adobe content that cannot be transferred, see After you migrate.

One-time use and permanence

Once you migrate your assets, you cannot reverse the process, nor can you migrate your files to a different account via the migration portal. If you have already used the migration portal and want to move your files to another account, you'll need to do so manually (in other words, download and store the files before uploading them into your Adobe account).

Migrate your assets

See Before you begin before you migrate your files.

Important:
Do not create new Adobe files or add files to your IU Adobe account while you are using the migration portal.

For step-by-step migration instructions, see Migrate assets. When the process is complete, Adobe will send a notification email message to the address associated with your personal account.
