Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser tool that prevents students from accessing external resources during proctored assessments administered in testing centers and computer labs (it is installed on Windows computers in the STCs). While taking assessments using LockDown Browser, students are unable to print, copy, go to other web pages, or access other applications. Once students start their assessments, they are locked into them until they submit them for grading. LockDown Browser is available for use in Canvas.

Important:
Respondus Monitor, the auto-proctoring component of Respondus LockDown Browser, is available without fee for the 2020-21 academic year to all IU courses, provided the instructor submits the Online Proctoring Acknowledgement. For details, see ARCHIVED: Assess student learning during COVID-19: Alternate assessment, Respondus Monitor, and Examity.
Important:
IU's contract for Respondus Monitor has expired as of August 20, 2021. Remote proctoring is reserved for fully online programs as outlined in About online proctoring at IU. Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus 4.0 are still available, but the Monitor option in Respondus LockDown Browser is no longer available.

Download and install Respondus LockDown Browser

If an instructor requires you to use Respondus LockDown Browser for added security when taking a test or quiz, you'll need to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser before you can start the test or quiz.

Important:

Instructors need to edit the exam settings to allow iPads to access Respondus LockDown Browser. (Chromebooks can now access LockDown Browser with no instructor intervention.) Android tablets cannot use Respondus LockDown Browser.

Note:
You must have full administrative privileges on your device to install Respondus LockDown Browser. If you are using a Mac, to check if you are an administrator or need to create an administrator account, see How to Create a New Administrator Account on Mac OS.

    Respondus LockDown Browser required
  4. Follow the instructions for your device type:
    • On a computer:
      1. Confirm that your operating system is correctly displayed in the section on the left side of the Respondus download page (Windows or Mac). If not, click Do you need the [Other Operating System] version?
      2. Click Install Now. This will download either an .exe file (Windows), a .pkg file (Mac), or a .zip file containing a .pkg file (Mac).
        Note:
On macOS, after downloading the .pkg file or unzipping the .zip file to get to it, ensure that the filename of the .pkg file ends in a nine-digit number, with nothing appended to the end (such as "-2," which can happen if there is an old installer with the same name in the download directory). If the filename does not have the correct ID at the end, the installer will fail.
      3. Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions.
    • On a Chromebook:
      1. You will be redirected to the LockDown Browser extension in the Chrome Web Store. Click Add to Chrome.
      2. When the extension has been installed, you will see a screen telling you to go to the quiz in your LMS to continue. You will also see a note on your screen identifying the LockDown Browser extension icon. Once the extension is installed, LockDown Browser will find and use it for subsequent exams. Return to the quiz in Canvas and click Quizzes again to restart the quiz. Then proceed to the instructions below to take the quiz.
