ARCHIVED: Upcoming changes regarding access to statistical and mathematical packages at IU

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Currently, the UITS Research Applications and Deep Learning (RADL) group makes a variety of statistical and mathematical software packages available for use (at no cost to IU students, faculty, and staff) in the Student Technology Centers (STCs) at IU Bloomington and IUPUI, on IU's research supercomputers, and via IUanyWare. RADL also makes these packages available for purchase or lease to IU students, faculty, and staff who want to install them on their personal workstations. However, starting in 2021, access to certain statistical and mathematical packages via IUanyWare, the IU research supercomputer, or STC workstations will no longer be provided at no cost.

RADL will implement this change as follows:

  • February 2021: Starting February 8, 2021, to use Mathematica at IU, students, faculty, and staff will need to pay an annual $100 access fee. The fee will provide access to Mathematica via IUanyWare, on the research supercomputers, and in the STCs, and also will include a license for installing the software on your personal workstation.
    Note:
Starting February 8, 2021, Mathematica will no longer be available at no additional cost on the IU research supercomputers, in the STCs, or via IUanyWare. To perform similar functions using software available at IU for no additional cost, UITS recommends using R or Python. If you are unable to shift your planned usage of Mathematica for the spring 2021 semester, or if you have any other concerns about using Mathematica at IU, contact the Research Applications and Deep Learning (RADL) team.

The following licensing restrictions will still apply:

  • Each vendor has its own terms, and those terms have been adapted to meet the needs of IU students, faculty, and staff.
  • Your license ends when you are no longer affiliated with IU.
  • Software licenses are non-transferrable.
  • The lease period for all software is based on the fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. The initial fee must be paid upon installation of the software.
  • On IUware, you may pay using a departmental account or a credit card (via PayPal). To use a check to pay for your purchase, you must visit the ARCHIVED: RADL walk-in location.
  • RADL does not prorate software lease payments.

If you have questions about using statistical and mathematical software at Indiana University, contact the UITS Research Applications and Deep Learning team.
