About Visual Studio licensing at IU

Three versions of Microsoft Visual Studio are available to Indiana University faculty, staff, and students. See below for details.

On this page:

Visual Studio Community

Visual Studio Community is available at no charge to individual students for creating their own free and paid apps. IU faculty and staff can also use Visual Studio Community for classroom learning, academic research, and open source projects. For all other usage scenarios, you'll need to use one of the other versions of Visual Studio; see below for details. For more, see the Visual Studio Community license terms.

Visual Studio Professional

Visual Studio Professional is available to students, faculty, and staff (including lab installations) for academic use on all IU campuses through the university's enrollment in the Microsoft Imagine Standard program. You can download Visual Studio Professional from IUware. For more about Microsoft Imagine, see Microsoft Imagine and the Microsoft Imagine Subscription Agreement.

Individual faculty or staff members who would like to use Visual Studio Professional for non-academic purposes should purchase a license through IU's Microsoft Select agreement.

Visual Studio Enterprise

Visual Studio Enterprise is available to STEM departments enrolled in the Microsoft Imagine Premium program. These departments can offer Visual Studio Enterprise in their labs as well as provide individual product keys to their students and faculty. As part of IU's volume license agreement with Microsoft, IUware offers STEM departments a promotional code for a free subscription to the Microsoft Imagine Premium program; to request this code for enrollment, send mail to IUware. For more about Microsoft Imagine, see Microsoft Imagine and the Microsoft Imagine Subscription Agreement.

Individual faculty or staff members who would like to use Visual Studio Enterprise outside of the Imagine Premium program should purchase a license through IU's Microsoft Select agreement.
