Overview

Three versions of Microsoft Visual Studio are available to Indiana University faculty, staff, and students.

Visual Studio Community

Visual Studio Community is available without fee to individual students for creating their own free and paid apps.

IU faculty and staff can use Visual Studio Community for classroom learning, academic research, and open source projects.

For all other usage scenarios, you'll need to use one of the other versions of Visual Studio; see below for details. For more, see the Visual Studio Community license terms.

Visual Studio Professional

Visual Studio Professional is available for any purpose to schools and departments that purchase licenses.

Visual Studio Enterprise

Visual Studio Enterprise is available to STEM departments enrolled in the Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program. These departments can offer Visual Studio Enterprise in their labs as well as to their students and faculty. As part of IU's volume license agreement with Microsoft, IUware offers STEM departments a promotional code for a free subscription to the Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program. To access this code for enrollment:

1. Go to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching and sign in with your IU email address (username@iu.edu).
2. Accept the ULA agreement to proceed.
3. The new page should load with a list of software; if it hangs and doesn't load, select Software.
4. Select Visual Studio Enterprise Edition 2022.
5. On the right, select View Key to display and copy the code.
6. Select Download to download the software if needed.
