About the IU Apple Caching Service

The IU Apple Caching Service is a local cache that speeds up the download of software distributed by Apple on IU networks.

  1. Open System Preferences and select Profiles.
  2. Find the profile called "IU Apple Update Service".
  3. Delete this profile by selecting it, and then clicking the minus sign (-) at the bottom of the profile list.

Supported Clients

The following clients are supported by the Apple Caching Service:

  • OS X Yosemite (10.10) or later
  • iOS 8 or later
  • Apple TV 7 or later

Implementation Details

Clients access local caching servers through a combination of software on the device and on Apple servers. There are no traditional discovery mechanisms involved (e.g., Bonjour advertisements or IP broadcasts). Clients access the cached content by looking for specific DNS records in their default DNS search domain.

Clients that get their default DNS search domain from IU's DHCP service should find the DNS records automatically. The supported DNS search domains are:

  • ads.iu.edu
  • indiana.edu
  • iu.edu
  • iub.edu
  • iue.edu
  • iuk.edu
  • iun.edu
  • iupuc.edu
  • iupui.edu
  • ius.edu
  • iusb.edu
  • testads.iu.edu (for testing purposes)

If a client is not using one of the above domains as the default DNS search domain, the client will bypass the caching service and get content directly from Apple.

Currently, all public IU networks are covered by this service:
