Office 2016 at IU

Office 2016 is available to students, faculty, and staff through Microsoft 365.

Choosing the 32-bit or 64-bit version

Important:
Microsoft recommends running the 32-bit version of Office 2016; see 64-bit editions of Office 2016. Unless you need some of the noted benefits of using the 64-bit version, UITS also recommends that you install the 32-bit version.

To run the 64-bit version, you need 64-bit-capable hardware and a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or Windows 8.x.

If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements or the Microsoft recommendations above, or are concerned about compatibility issues with other programs or plug-ins, UITS highly recommends you install the 32-bit version.

If you wish to install the 64-bit version, you must uninstall all previous versions of Office and related tools. You will need to reinstall the 64-bit versions of these tools, if possible. Some Office 2010 products can be reinstalled after Office 2016 64-bit installation is complete.
