About edX at IU

On this page:

Overview

Indiana University has partnered with edX, the nonprofit platform for MOOCs (massive open online courses). Through this agreement, IU is able to offer a limited number of courses on the edX website, most of which are not for credit and are open for anyone to enroll in. IU's partnership is branded as IUx. See the list of open IUx offerings.

Canvas is the approved learning management system (LMS) for IU, and all credit-bearing courses are automatically provisioned in Canvas. edX hosts courses on its own proprietary LMS; content does not cross over between the two.

Units that wish to develop courses for distribution via the edX partnership must secure approval through the appropriate academic channels. As of July 9, 2020, only IU Bloomington is offering courses on the platform. If you are interested in exploring options through IU's edX partnership, email the edX team.

edX credentials through IU

edX offers courses from a variety of university, corporate, and nonprofit partners. Learners can enroll in these courses on a free track or a paid track. The paid track, which edX calls "Verified", allows learners to attempt to earn a certificate.

Certificates for courses or bundles of courses that IU offers on edX are distributed via edX in partnership with IU. Depending on the program, they may or may not be eligible for a credit pathway toward an IU program.

The Kelley School of Business offers two master's programs through edX; as of July 9, 2020, these are the only credit-bearing courses IU offers with edX.

For students

If you are a student taking master's courses through an IU degree program on edX, you will need to log into edX with your IU account by linking your IU account with your edX credentials.
