Use a graphical SFTP client with the Pages server

On this page:

Overview

These instructions are for using two graphical SFTP clients (WinSCP for Windows; Cyberduck for macOS) to transfer files between your personal computer and your Indiana University Pages home page account on Pages (ssh-pages.iu.edu). Your home page files are located in your web directory and its subdirectories.

Note:
When connecting to ssh-pages.iu.edu from outside the IU network, use VPN.

WinSCP (Windows)

For information about downloading and installing WinSCP, see SFTP clients recommended for use at IU. Once WinSCP is installed on your computer:

  1. Launch WinSCP, and then, in the "Login" window:
    1. On the left, click New Site.
    2. On the right:
      • In the "Host name" field, enter ssh-pages.iu.edu.
      • In the "User name" field, enter your IU username (all lowercase, NOT your full IU email address).
      • In the "Password" field, enter your IU passphrase.
    3. At the bottom, click Login.
      • A Duo push will be sent to your primary Duo device. If you do not have access to that device, or it is not capable of receiving a Duo push, you may use WinSCP via IUanyWare to bypass this requirement.
  2. When WinSCP establishes the connection, you will see your local computer's file system displayed in the left pane and your web directory on Pages in the right pane:
    • To upload files and folders from your computer to your web directory, in the left pane, click to select the desired items, and then drag and drop them into the right pane.
    • To download files and folders from your web directory to your computer, in the right pane, select the desired items, and then drag and drop them into the left pane.

Cyberduck (macOS)

For information about downloading and installing Cyberduck, see SFTP clients recommended for use at IU.

Once Cyberduck is installed on your computer:

  1. Launch Cyberduck, and then, in the upper left, click Open Connection...; alternatively, from the File menu, select Open Connection....
  2. At the top of the sheet that appears, from the drop-down menu, select SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), and then:
    • In the "Server" field, enter ssh-pages.iu.edu.
    • In the "Username" field, enter your IU username (all lowercase and should not include your full IU email address).
    • In the "Password" field, enter your IU passphrase.
  3. To log into a directory other than your home directory, at the bottom of the sheet, click More Options. In the "Path:" field, type the directory name (for example, ~/web).
  4. Click Connect.

The first time you connect to a remote server, Cyberduck displays an "unknown host key" warning. Click Allow to continue.

  5. When Cyberduck establishes the connection, you will see a window displaying the contents of your web directory on Pages:
    • To upload files and folders from your computer to your web directory, in a Finder window, select the desired items, and then drag and drop them into the Cyberduck window.
    • To download files and folders from your web directory to your computer, in the Cyberduck window, select the desired items, and then drag and drop them into a Finder window.
