Avoid problems connecting to IU resources when traveling abroad

On this page:

Overview

If you have trouble connecting to IU resources while outside the United States, IU offers a number of options and resources to help you learn, teach, and work from wherever you are. Observe local laws, and check to make sure that any content or services you access are allowed in your country, region, and locality.

For more about countries where access to some services may be restricted, see About international Two-Step Login (Duo) access and restrictions to some services.

Zoom

Be sure to use the official Zoom client or app; third party apps may not be secure. To use the official Zoom client from a PC or Mac, go to Zoom at IU, and follow the onscreen instructions. From a mobile device, use the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to download "Zoom Cloud Meetings". Make sure that the app you download is published by Zoom or Zoom.us, and not a third-party publisher. If you have trouble accessing the official Zoom client, you can try one of the ways listed below. For details about accessing Zoom outside the US, see Accommodate international students who can't access Zoom.

Canvas

To begin using Canvas, from a desktop computer, go to Canvas and follow the onscreen instructions. From a mobile device, use the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to download "Canvas Student". Make sure that the app you download is published by Instructure, and not a third-party publisher. If you have trouble accessing the official Canvas client, try one of the following options.

Options if you have trouble

IUanyWare

IUanyWare allows you to use a virtual PC or application as if you were on an IU campus, including providing you with an IU IP address. This allows you to access resources through the IU libraries, such as journals and scholarly publications, and to download applications from US versions of the Google Play Store and Apple App Store websites. Another way to ensure access to IU library materials is to access them through your campus library site.

Several new desktops have been added to IUanyWare, with a wide collection of applications already installed. Using the IUanyWare desktops to launch a browser or a pre-installed app will provide the best experience for students while abroad.

VPN

The IU VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides you a secure connection to the internet through the IU campus network. Using the VPN will help you gain access to certain resources, such as IU test servers, that must be accessed from an IU IP address..

Remote Desktop

Faculty and staff who have a computer on campus may be able to connect to it, and then use it to connect to the internet through a protocol called RDP. To see if you can use it, contact your local UITS support person or your campus Support Center.
