Edit distribution groups

On this page:

Overview

Because Indiana University's Active Directory resides on-premises, and Exchange accounts reside in Microsoft 365, it is not possible to use Outlook and Outlook on the web to edit an existing on-premises Active Directory group (see Owners of an on-premises distribution group synced to O365 can't manage the distribution group in Exchange Online). To edit membership of a distribution group created using an on-premises AD group, you will need to use a different method. The manager of the AD group or an IT Pro can use the instructions below.

Distribution groups created directly in Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory or AAD) can be managed using Outlook and Outlook on the web. The Enterprise Microsoft Administration team (formerly CCI) is developing a method to allow IT Pros to create groups directly in the Entra ID environment.

For more on methods of sending mail to multiple recipients at IU, see Send mail to groups of people at IU.

Edit an on-premises Active Directory distribution group

Note:
Someone with edit access to the Active Directory group (either the listed manager of the group or an IT Pro) will need to complete these steps to edit the Active Directory group membership as needed.

To access Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC), you can use IUanyWare (see Set up and use IUanyWare), or you can install Remote Server Administration Tools on a Windows computer (see Install RSAT features in Windows 10 version 1809 or Windows Server 2019 and later).

To edit a group with ADUC:

  1. Open ADUC. If your edit access to AD groups has been granted through a service account, launch ADUC as the service account.
  2. Go to Action, then Find..., and then use the search dialog to search for the AD group.
  3. Double-click the group in the search results.
  4. Go to the members tab. Use the Add... and Remove buttons and associated dialog boxes to add and remove users as necessary.

You can also edit Active Directory groups with PowerShell. For more, see Add-ADGroupMember and Remove-ADGroupMember.
