Your power management settings control when your screen goes blank or your computer goes to sleep automatically. To change power management settings in Windows 7, Vista, or XP:

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel. Then choose Power Options.
  2. From the list in the left pane, click Choose when to turn off the display or Change when the computer sleeps.
  3. Set your options. For each action, "Turn off the display:" and "Put the computer to sleep:", you can select times ranging from 1 minute to Never.
  4. Click Save changes.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Power Management or Power Options.
  3. From the drop-down menu next to "Turn off monitor:", select a time from After 1 min to Never. You may also have options for "Turn off hard disks:" (3 mins to Never) and "System standby:" (1 min to Never).
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
