ARCHIVED: With a BlackBerry at IU, how do I search for an address in the Exchange GAL?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

If you are on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) at Indiana University, your BlackBerry searches the Exchange Global Address List (GAL) by default for address lookups; your device cannot search the GAL if you are not on the BES.

Note: The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) service will be retired by January 1, 2015; see ARCHIVED: About the retired BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server). As of January 1, 2013, no new BES accounts are being created. UITS recommends you replace your BlackBerry with a device that is compatible with ActiveSync.

Note: The best way to search for a name is to enter the last name, then a comma, and then the first initial. If you don't know the person's first initial, enter the last name and a comma. If you aren't sure how to spell the person's last name, enter only the first few letters.

Use the Address Book

  1. Click Address Book, and if needed, choose Lookup.
  2. Begin entering your contact's name, and the GAL will adjust as you type. Select the appropriate contact name.

From within a new mail message

  1. Select the Compose icon, and the "To:" screen will appear.
  2. Begin entering the name of the contact, and you will see the list adjust as you type.
  3. Click your contact's name and the message screen will appear. If you wish to send the message to more than one person, place the cursor in the next "To:" field and enter the next name, repeating as needed.
