About the Windows Hosting Environment

The Windows Hosting Environment (WHE) serves a wide variety of web applications and meets other information system needs for departments on all IU campuses.

Unique features include a Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) web server environment that supports dynamic web pages written in Adobe ColdFusion, Microsoft .NET Framework, and .NET 6.0. Web pages and code hosted in this environment may access data from the WHE's Microsoft SQL server environment, or may use other data stores as desired by the client and acceptable to the provider. The WHE is approved for Critical data and PHI. For more about data classifications, see Classification levels of institutional data.

The departments develop and maintain the applications and databases, and UITS provides the virtual machines, software, and system administration through a combined effort of Enterprise Web Technical Services (WebTech), the WHE, Enterprise Windows & Azure Administration (EWA), Storage and Virtualization, Computer Operations, and Support Center groups.

The WHE is a baseline service. There are no fees unless the 10 GB storage limit is exceeded. Extra resources are billed at the Intelligent Infrastructure rate; see Rates and costs of UITS services.

To request a WHE project, go to webhost.iu.edu ( required). All projects must have at least one developer who is a full-time faculty or staff member.

For more about the WHE, see You do not have sufficient permission to view this document., or complete the WHE request form.
