Indiana University Intelligent Infrastructure (II) offers extensible virtual systems and backup services backed by enterprise-grade UITS support services.

Virtual systems

All virtual systems are hosted on high-end HP enterprise-class x86 Opteron servers. Each virtual system is provisioned to match your configuration request.

Base system features

  • 1 CPU
  • 1GB system memory
  • 35GB SAN disk

Note: A virtual CPU is equivalent to a core in a physical CPU. Up to four virtual CPUs can be allocated to any single virtual system.

System options

  • Additional CPUs (whole increments)
  • Additional system memory (1GB increments)
  • Additional Fibre Channel disk space (10GB increments)

Included services

  • Off-site weekly backup of virtual system initial disk for operating system files, normally limited to 35GB
  • Provisioning of your virtual system at the most current supported levels using VMware
  • The flexibility to add system resources, including identical, special development, or test environments
  • Lifecycle hardware replacement every three years or less
  • UITS management of hardware acquisition and installation
  • Application of equipment microcode patches as required
  • Rapid response to critical hardware and production issues
  • Vendor warrants and maintenance contracts, including 24/7/365 hardware maintenance and support with a four-hour response time
  • Overlapping support with other UITS units in the event of a performance issue

Notes:

  • If you subscribe to a virtual system rental, you assume all responsibilities for system administration, including any and all installations of software and related components.
  • UITS supports only Red Hat Linux. You may install a variant, but you must assume all responsibilities for security scans, integrity, security compliance, and any and all installation of software and related components, and other items as indicated.
  • For operating system compatibility information, see VMware's Supported Guest Operating Systems.

Optional disk storage for virtual systems

Additional storage is available for II virtual systems in 10GB increments. The additional space becomes available within five business days of the initial request, although requests for large amounts of storage may take longer.

Rather than allocating space for virtual systems on physical hard drives in the host server, UITS allocates room for your system in its Hitachi SAN. This spreads your data across network components for increased availability and performance.

II does not offer a file server, nor does it offer network-attached storage. Applications or database systems running on the virtual system manage what is stored and how it is accessed.

Note: Virtual system rental is required for this service; the storage cannot be used for systems or servers outside the II environment.

Backup services

II data backup services are available for purchase either independently or in conjunction with virtual system rentals. Data is backed up using an IBM TotalStorage 3592 Enterprise Tape Drive. These services are not intended for individual workstations or personal computers.

Note: II virtual system rentals only include off-site disaster recovery backup for your virtual system's operating system files. Disaster recovery backups are not intended for backup and recovery of data stored on the virtual system. For daily backup of your data, use II data backup services.

If you use Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) for backups of an II virtual system, there is no additional TSM license cost. However, if you subscribe to backup services for an owned server, you are responsible for purchasing TSM backup client software, including upgrades and patches.

Costs

For current charges, see Rates and costs of services. Billing is monthly.

If you estimated your resource needs incorrectly, you can within reason increase or decrease the resources in your agreement; your billing will be adjusted accordingly.
