ARCHIVED: How can I print routing bar codes on envelopes?

Many shareware and public domain programs are available for printing routing bar codes on envelopes; see ARCHIVED: For Microsoft Windows, how can I get freeware and shareware? or ARCHIVED: For Mac OS X, where can I download freeware, shareware, commercial software, and software updates? Also, TrueType fonts exist for most bar code formats. Additionally, word processing programs, including Microsoft Word and WordPerfect, have options for printing bar codes on envelopes. See the instructions below.

Note: POSTNET bar codes are valid only with US addresses.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word 2007 does not support this feature; see ARCHIVED: What functionalities available in Microsoft Word 2003 are not available in Word 2007?

Word 2004 and 2008

  1. From the Tools menu, select Labels... or Envelopes... .

  2. In the appropriate box(es), type the address(es), including zip codes.

  3. Check Delivery point barcode. Additionally, for envelopes, you can check FIM-A to add a Facing Identification Mark to the front of the envelope.

Note: Delivery point barcode will be grayed out if the label selected is not suitable for POSTNET bar code printing.

  4. Click OK.

Word 2002 and 2003

  1. From the Tools menu, select Letters and Mailings, and then Envelopes and Labels.

  2. Click Options, and then click the Envelope Options tab.

  3. Check Delivery point barcode, and then click OK.

Word 2001 and v.X

  1. From the Tools menu, select Envelopes... .

  2. In the "Delivery Address:" section, check Delivery point barcode. Additionally, you can check FIM-A to add a Facing Identification Mark to the front of the envelope.

Word 2000

  1. From the Tools menu, select Envelopes and Labels... .

  2. Click the Options button, and then click the Envelope Options tab.

  3. Check Delivery point barcode, and then click OK.

WordPerfect

WordPerfect 12 and 13 (or X3)

  1. From the Format menu, select Envelope.

  2. Type the delivery and return addresses, including zip codes.

  3. To add the routing bar codes, under the mailing address, check Include barcode. Click Barcode to input the routing zip code or adjust the position of the bar code on the envelope.

WordPerfect 9

  1. From the Format menu, select Envelopes... . An envelope document will open.

  2. Type the delivery and return addresses, including zip codes.

  3. To add the routing bar codes, click the Bar Code button on the toolbar. WordPerfect will then ask for a nine- or five-digit zip code, as well as a location to print the bar code (either above or below the mailing address). You must select one of these two radio buttons; if you leave the None radio button checked, WordPerfect will not print the bar code.
