ARCHIVED: In Unix mail, how can I forward a copy of my incoming messages to another address?

Note: Mail service is not available on any of the UITS central Unix systems at Indiana University.

On most Unix systems, to forward a copy of your incoming messages to another address, configure your ~/.forward file so it looks similar to the following:

  \local_username, other_username@host.domain

Replace local_username with your username on the computer where the ~/.forward file is located. Replace other_username@host.domain with the email address to which you want to forward your mail.

To turn off mail forwarding, remove the ~/.forward file.

At Indiana University, for personal or departmental Linux or Unix systems support, see Get help for Linux or Unix at IU.
