ARCHIVED: On my LISTSERV list, how do I delete subscribers?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: IU retired its LISTSERV system in spring 2012, replacing it with IU List, a new mailing list service. See About IU List

In LISTSERV, to delete subscribers, you can either send a command to the LISTSERV server or use the LISTSERV web interface.

On this page:

Using LISTSERV commands

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your list:

  Campus Server address
  IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
  IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
  IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
  IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
  IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
  IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to listname@indiana.edu). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

To remove multiple subscribers from your list, you can include several of the following commands in a single email message:

  • Deleting with notification: To delete a subscriber from your LISTSERV mailing list and send that person a notice, send the following command in the body (not in the subject line) of a message to the LISTSERV server:
      DELETE listname userid@host.domain

Replace listname with the name of your list. Replace userid@host.domain with the full email address of the subscriber you want to remove. If you are unsure of a subscriber's exact address, you can use the REVIEW listname command to see a list of your subscribers. See ARCHIVED: On my LISTSERV list, how do I get a list of current subscribers?

  • Deleting without notification: If you prefer not to notify the subscriber, use the following command:
      QUIET DELETE listname userid@host.domain

Replace listname with the name of your list. Replace userid@host.domain with the full email address of the subscriber you want to remove.

  • Deleting groups: To delete a group of subscribers with a common feature in their subscription addresses, you can use a wildcard, denoted by * (an asterisk). You can also use this command to delete users with complex mailing addresses:
      DELETE listname *@host.domain

Replace listname with the name of your list. Replace host.domain with a specific host and domain (e.g., indiana.edu).

Using the LISTSERV web interface

For information about using the LISTSERV web interface, see ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?

  1. In the web interface, click Log In. You will be prompted for your email address and a password. Use the email address of the list you wish to edit, and the password for that email address.
  2. At the top of the page, under "List Management", select Subscriber Management.
  3. Select the list from which you wish to delete subscribers.
  4. Under "Examine or delete a subscription", type the email address of the subscriber in one of the following ways:
      <mscott@enterprise.starfleet.org> Montgomery Scott

      Montgomery Scott <mscott@enterprise.starfleet.org>

      Montgomery Scott

      M*cott
  5. Select whether you want to automatically send a message informing the subscriber of the deletion, and then click Delete.
