Steel, a cluster of nine computer nodes, provided accounts for instructional and general purpose computing. Steel's primary purpose was to provide a general-purpose Unix computing environment for academic use. Steel was also the system on which students, faculty, and staff at Indiana University edited their personal home page, or Mypage.

Steel, purchased in March 2003, reached the end of its hardware life cycle in 2008. In June 2008, Steel became read-only, and on October 1, 2008, UITS disabled logins. Steel is replaced by Indiana University's newest supercomputer system, Quarry. For more about Quarry, see ARCHIVED: Getting started on Quarry The Mypage service has migrated to a new platform, Mercury. For more, see ARCHIVED: About the Mypage migration.
