ARCHIVED: Why can't I FTP files from Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP?
Note: UITS recommends that you use a current version of Windows on computers connected to the Indiana University network; see Recommended Windows operating systems at IU.
At Indiana University, one possible cause for FTP failures in Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP is that IP header compression is active. The IU network does not support IP header compression; therefore, if it is active on your computer, uploading, making FTP transfers, and even pasting text into a network client window can fail in Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP.
To make FTP work, follow the instructions below to change your TCP/IP settings:
- Open .
- Double-click . In Windows Me, is a link in the left margin.
- Right-click the icon you use for your dial-up connection. From the menu that appears, select .
- Click the tab (in Windows 95 or 98) or the tab (in Windows Me).
- Click the button.
- In this panel near the bottom, make sure that is not checked.
- Click until all the panels are closed.
This setting will take effect the next time you connect to the network using Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP.
