ARCHIVED: Why can't I FTP files from Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: UITS recommends that you use a current version of Windows on computers connected to the Indiana University network; see Recommended Windows operating systems at IU.

At Indiana University, one possible cause for FTP failures in Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP is that IP header compression is active. The IU network does not support IP header compression; therefore, if it is active on your computer, uploading, making FTP transfers, and even pasting text into a network client window can fail in Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP.

To make FTP work, follow the instructions below to change your TCP/IP settings:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking. In Windows Me, Dial-up Networking is a link in the left margin.
  3. Right-click the icon you use for your dial-up connection. From the menu that appears, select Properties.
  4. Click the Server Type tab (in Windows 95 or 98) or the Networking tab (in Windows Me).
  5. Click the TCP/IP settings button.
  6. In this panel near the bottom, make sure that Use IP header compression is not checked.
  7. Click OK until all the panels are closed.

This setting will take effect the next time you connect to the network using Windows 95, 98, or Me PPP.
