In my browser, how do I download an inline or background image from a web page?
An inline image appears alongside text in a web page, while a background image usually appears in a tiled pattern behind the text. Both kinds of image can be in either JPEG or GIF format. You can use Netscape, Internet Explorer, or Safari to download an inline or background image, according to the appropriate steps below.

Netscape
To download an inline image, follow these steps:
- Position your mouse on top of the image you want to download. In
Mac OS or Mac OS X, hold down the mouse button.
In Windows, right-click.
- A pop-up menu will appear; choose
Save Image As.... ASavedialog box will appear, allowing you to select the directory in which you want to save the image.
To download a background image in Netscape 6.x, 7.x, or 8, follow these steps:
- On the page with the background image you want to download,
right-click an area of the background (in Windows) or hold down the
mouse button (in Mac OS and Mac OS X).
- From the menu that appears, select
View Background Image.
- The next page that appears will contain the background image; it may appear as a small square in the upper left corner. You can then download it with a pop-up menu as described above.
To download a background image in Netscape 4.x, follow these steps:
- From the
Viewmenu, selectPage Info. (If the background is in a frame, selectFrame Info).
- The
Page InfoorFrame Infoscreen will have the URL for the background image (it will be designated as such). Click the URL and the image will appear in the bottom frame of the window. You will then be able to download it with a pop-up menu as described above.
Internet Explorer
To download an inline image, follow these steps:
- Position your mouse on top of the image you want to download
and right-click (for Mac OS or Mac OS X,
Ctrl-click).
- A pop-up menu will appear. In Windows, choose
Save Picture As.... In Mac OS or Mac OS X, chooseDownload Image to Disk.
- In the dialog box that appears, select the directory in which you want to save the image.
To download a background image, follow these steps:
Windows
- Right-click the background image you want to download.
- A pop-up menu will appear; select
Save Background As.... ASave Picturedialog box will appear, allowing you to select the directory in which you want to save the image.
Mac OS and Mac OS X
Note: Microsoft is no longer developing or distributing Internet Explorer for the Macintosh. UITS strongly recommends that you use a different browser, such as Safari or Firefox.
To download a background image in Internet Explorer for Mac OS or Mac
OS X, Ctrl-click or right-click the image and, from the
menu that appears, select View Source or View Frame
Source. Find the URL (address) for the background image in the
document's <body> tag (it should be near the top). You can open
that URL and then download the image according to the instructions
above for downloading inline images in Internet Explorer.
Safari
To download an inline image, click and drag the image to the desktop
or a document in another application. You can also
Ctrl-click the image and select either Save Image
As... or Copy Image to Clipboard.
To download a background image, Ctrl-click or right-click
the image and, from the menu that appears, select View Source
or View Frame Source. Find the URL (address) for the
background image in the document's <body> tag (it should be near
the top). Open that URL and then download the image as described above
for inline images in Safari.
