For Mac OS X, where can I download freeware, shareware, commercial software, and software updates?

For freely distributed applications and software updates owned by Apple, see Apple Downloads. Many of these downloads are also available through Software Update; for more information, see For Mac OS X, how do I obtain and install system software updates?

In addition, shareware, freeware, and commercial software created by Apple and by third-party developers is available from Apple's Mac App Store, which is included in Mac OS X 10.6.6 and later. To access it, select App Store... from the Apple menu.
