At IUB, what is Carry-in Consulting?

Carry-in Consulting is a fee-based service that the UITS Support Center provides to students, faculty, staff, and affiliates of Indiana University Bloomington. Carry-in Consulting handles software and operating system (OS) problems only, not hardware.

If you have hardware problems (e.g., a bad wireless card or a damaged CD-ROM drive), contact the manufacturer or a local computer repair store.

Carry-in Consulting provides the following services:

  • Operating system installation: $75 ($1/1GB)
    Includes the complete installation of an operating system and requested software; also includes data backup up to 5GB; $1 per 1GB for additional data

    As part of this service, if your network access has been disabled due to a University Information Policy Office (UIPO) block, Carry-in Consulting can re-enable your DHCP access after performing the rebuild and completing all steps required by UIPO.

  • Data backup: $35 ($1/1GB)
    Includes up to 15GB of data; $1 per 1GB for additional data. Data may be burned to CD/DVD, transferred to an external drive provided by the customer, or stored on the Support Center storage servers for a period not exceeding 30 days.

  • Software/driver installation: $35 ($5/item)
    Includes the installation of up to five items; additional items may be requested for $5 per item

  • Network and security setup: $35 ($5/item)
    Includes wired/wireless/dial-up configuration for the IU network, installing the latest operating system updates, and installing/updating security software (antivirus and anti-malware); additional items may be requested for $5 per item

  • Administrator password reset: $35
    Includes the reset of any administrator account password when locked out of the system. You must provide proof of ownership of the computer; see At IUB, if I forget the administrator password for my Windows computer, what can I do?

  • Other services: $35/hour
    Services that do not fall under the categories listed above are subject to a rate of $35/hour, with a minimum 1-hour charge; requires approval from the supervisor on duty

All work is performed at the Support Center walk-in office in the Information Commons on the first floor of the Herman B Wells Library building.

Note: You must bring your computer to the Support Center office; pick-up service is not available. For laptops, be sure to bring your power cord as well. The service is first-come, first-served with an average turnaround time of two business days. During heavy volume periods (e.g., virus outbreaks, move-in week, and the first two weeks of the fall semester), the average turnaround time is three or more business days.
