In Windows, how do I transfer a web page to my account on Steel?

Note: On June 30, 2008, UITS will retire Steel and move the Mypage service to a new platform. For more, see About the Mypage migration.

If your Windows computer is connected to the Internet, you can use secure FTP (SFTP) to transfer files from your computer to your account on Steel. For more information, see What is SFTP, and how do I use it?

If you have not yet published a web page on Steel, see At IU, how can I publish personal pages on Mypage?

SSH Secure Shell

SSH Secure Shell for Windows is an SSH communications application that includes SFTP. This software is available in the STCs.

To use SFTP to transfer files in SSH Secure Shell for Windows:

  1. If you connect via modem, first establish your connection.

  2. If you are in an STC, open a file transfer window by selecting Start, then Programs, then Utilities, and then Secure FTP. If you have downloaded SSH Secure Shell and are running it on your own computer, select Start, then Programs, then SSH Secure Shell, and then Secure File Transfer Client.

Note: The Windows XP default desktop view and Start menu are different from the Windows Classic View (e.g., in Windows 2000). Therefore, navigating to certain items can be different. In the interest of broad applicability, most Knowledge Base instructions assume you are using Classic View. For information about switching your Windows XP default view to Classic View, see In Windows XP, how do I switch to the Windows Classic View, Classic theme, or Classic Control Panel?

  3. From the File menu, select Connect... .

  4. In the Connect to Remote Host window, enter the following:

    1. In the "Host Name:" field, type steel.ucs.indiana.edu .
    2. In the "User Name:" field, type your username.
    3. Click Connect.
    4. When you are prompted for a password, enter your password.
When the software connects to Steel, you should see a listing of your files on Steel.

To move a file from your computer to Steel:
  1. From the Operation menu, select Upload Dialog... . An Upload - Select Files window will open.

  2. Browse to the file you'd like to move. Highlight the filename and click Upload.
To move a file from Steel to your computer:
  1. Click to select the file you wish to download.

  2. From the Operation menu, select Download Dialog... . A Download - Select Folder window will open.

  3. Browse to the target directory and click Download.

If you use an HTML editor (e.g., Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, or Microsoft FrontPage) with a built-in FTP client, you will probably not be able to use the built-in FTP client because it doesn't use SFTP. For directions on how to transfer web files created with one of these editors, see At IU, using FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or Netscape Composer, how do I publish my web pages on Mypage or Webserve?
