ARCHIVED: In Mac OS or Mac OS X, how do I access the CFS?

Overview

Note: UITS has retired CFS. A new file storage service for researchers became available in a public test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see At IU, what is the Research File System (RFS)? Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell IU.EDU.

To access your CFS space at Indiana University, you must have a connection established to the Internet. This can be a network connection on campus (for example, via Ethernet in campus housing or in your office), a dial-in connection to the IU Bloomington or IUPUI modem pool, or any connection through an outside Internet service provider (ISP). There are four ways you can access the CFS in Mac OS or Mac OS X: via the web, AppleShare, Server Message Block (SMB), or secure FTP (SFTP).

Access via the web

To access CFSWeb, the web interface to the CFS, you will need to have a current web browser that supports secure connections via the SSL protocol. In your browser, go to:

Replace username with your username.

Once you enter this address, a dialog box will appear prompting you to enter your CFS username and password.

Access via AppleShare

To mount your CFS space using AppleShare, you must be running Mac OS 8.0 or higher and have a connection to the Internet.

Mounting a volume to CFS in Mac OS X

1. In the Finder, from the Go menu, select Connect To Server... .
   
   
2. In the Connect to Server window, in the "Address:" field, enter: afp://cfs.iu.edu/username

   Replace username with your username.

3. Click the Connect button. In the authentication window that appears, enter your CFS username and password next to "Name:" and "Password:", respectively, and then click Connect.

Mounting a volume to CFS in Mac OS 8.x and 9.x

1. From the Apple menu, select Chooser. In the window that appears, click the AppleShare icon.
   
   
2. Click the Server IP Address... button.
   
   
3. In the box that opens, under "Enter the Server Address:", enter: cfs.iu.edu
4. Click Connect. In the authentication box that appears, enter your CFS username and password next to "Name:" and "Password:", respectively, then click Connect.
   
   
5. In the box that appears, click your username, then click OK.

Access via SMB

To mount your CFS space using SMB, the sharing protocol used in Windows, you must have Mac OS X 10.1 or later. You can connect this way from a networked computer on campus or through a dial-in connection to the IU modem pools, but not through an outside ISP.

Note: Because you cannot access the resource forks of files while you are connected using SMB, do not attempt to modify, upload, or download Mac OS applications while you are connected to CFS in this fashion. To access your CFS space over SMB, follow these directions:

1. In the Finder, from the Go menu, select Connect to Server... .
   
   
2. In the Connect to Server window, in the "Address:" field, enter: smb://cfs.iu.edu/username Replace username with your username. Click the Connect button.
   
   
3. In the authentication window that opens, under "Workgroup/Domain", type ADS . Then, under "Username" and "Password", enter your CFS username and password. Click OK.

Access via SFTP
