At IU, what is the ESRI Unlimited Program?
At Indiana University, in recognition of the large financial commitment some departments make for the acquisition of ESRI GIS software, UITS has created a pricing option allowing departments to expand their use of ESRI software in teaching and research while incurring no additional expense. This program applies to all IU campuses. For ESRI software restrictions, see IU's software and license agreement with ESRI.
The ESRI Unlimited Program grants a department access to unlimited licenses for ArcGIS and companion client software such as ArcPad. ArcGIS Server is not included in this package. To qualify for the Unlimited Program, customers must meet the following criteria:
- The department must pay an annual maintenance fee of $5,500. The
annual licenses are effective from August 1 through July 31 of the
following year.
- All software for staff must be installed on computers owned by
IU. Only faculty may install ArcGIS software on personally owned
computers.
- The department must comply with existing UITS policies regarding
the local Primary
GIS Contact within departments. All requests for software, data,
sentinel keys, keycodes, and technical support must come directly from
departmental Primary GIS Contacts.
- To receive prompt technical assistance, departments must be
running the latest available software versions with updates and
patches installed.
- Departments cannot run their own unlimited license services. The
department must use the Central License Service, which runs
on redundant Unix systems managed by UITS Research
Technologies. The license service must be able to identify the
departmental workstations via hostname, IP address, or
username, using ADS authentication.
- The department must still pay a one-time $50 fee to cover the cost of each new ESRI sentinel key used to support local license management on a laptop or desktop computer. Local license management is only permitted under the Unlimited Program when users are unable to use the central license service.
You can order GIS and remote sensing software using the UITS GIS License System (requires CAS login).
