Requiring nonsubscribers to confirm postings

List owners may modify their list configuration so that nonsubscribers are required to confirm their messages to the list while subscribers may post without confirmation. This feature can dramatically reduce spam distributed to subscribers on public lists.

  • To use this feature in your public list, modify the Send keyword to:
      * Send= Public,Confirm,Non-Member
  • To use this feature in your edited list, change the Send keyword to:
      * Send= Editor,Hold,Confirm,Non-Member

Modifying the Send keyword in this way helps to reduce the amount of spam sent to public discussion lists without inconveniencing the subscribers. List owners and editors are considered to be members of the list even if they are not subscribed to it, and do not have to confirm their postings to the list.

In the case of the edited list, nonsubscribers will have to confirm their messages before they are sent to the list editor. Messages from subscribers will go directly to the editor.

The confirmation required is the usual "OK" confirmation and will contain a web link. For more, see ARCHIVED: In LISTSERV, what is the OK mechanism?

You may use the LISTSERV web interface to modify your list configuration. For details, see ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?

Specifying maximum digest size in kilobytes or megabytes

Owners may now specify digest size in either kilobytes or megabytes. In earlier versions of LISTSERV, you could only set the maximum digest size based on the number of lines.

  • To cut the digest at 100KB, set the Digest keyword as follows:
      * Digest= Yes,Same,Daily,Size(100K)
  • To cut the digest at 1MB, use:
      * Digest= Yes,Same,Daily,Size(1M)

You may use the LISTSERV web interface to modify your list configuration. For details, see ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?

Messages to -request addresses require sender confirmation

All messages sent to the LISTSERV-REQUEST or listname-request addresses require confirmation from the sender before they will be passed on to the appropriate person(s). This change has been made primarily to address the increasing amount of spam and viruses being sent to -request addresses by automated processes.

Subscriber's Corner

When accessing the Subscriber's Corner via the web interface, you no longer need to log in. Login is still required to subscribe to any list.

Public list archives

When viewing public archives, email addresses are no longer visible in the mail headers or the body of the message unless you are logged into the web interface page. When viewed without a login, email addresses are replaced with "[log in to unmask]".
