What is security software?

The two main types of security software are virus protection software (e.g., Symantec/Norton AntiVirus), and software to remove adware and spyware.

Virus protection software

Antivirus software prevents and removes computer viruses. Such software usually includes a "real-time" protection feature that attempts to stop incoming viruses before they infect your computer. This type of software can also scan your computer for viruses. Antivirus software requires regular updating to remain effective against new viruses.

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff for free via IUware) for your operating system, being sure to upgrade safely (see In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?), and that you update your virus definitions daily and scan your computer weekly. For instructions, see:

Adware and spyware removal software

Adware and spyware removal software scans and removes unwanted and malicious software applications, though not viruses. As with virus protection software, you need to update your adware/spyware removal programs so they stay effective. IU students, faculty, and staff can get Windows Defender for free via IUware.
