How do I get an iu.edu, .org, .net, or .info address?
iu.edu email addresses
Indiana University email addresses using the iu.edu
domain are available for all students, faculty, and staff. See:
- How do I create a new IU email address?
- Guidelines for avoiding service interruptions when changing your primary email address at IU
iu.edu service addresses and other top-level
domains
To use one of the domains mentioned below, you need approval from the IU Public Affairs Web Committee. To request approval, submit the Domain/Virtual Host Name Request form. Processing such requests takes two business days. If you don't receive a response by then or have an emergency request, call 812-855-4047.
Before making a request, considering the following guidelines:
iu.edu service addresses
The iu.edu domain is reserved for IU
services that meet either of the following requirements:
- They have a university-wide scope; for example, internally focused
services or information provided from web pages must be applicable and
accessible to constituents on a major portion of IU's campuses.
- They broadly represent IU in such a way that any externally focused service or information provided from web pages represents a non-profit, non-commercial agency, institute, or program supported by a major portion of IU's campuses.
Other top-level domains
Use of top-level domains that do not have an IU association
included in the name (e.g., WellKnownInstitute.org,
.net, or .info) will be granted only in the
following cases:
- For
.org, the entity represented by the web page or server being named must be a non-profit, non-commercial academic agency, institute, or program supported by a consortium consisting of an IU department or office and at least five external non-profit organizations.
- For
.net, the service represented by the web page or server being named must be part of a set or network of similar external web pages or servers.
- For
.info, the service represented must provide an outlet for information that has an outside market, and such information must be uniquely possessed by a particular IU department or agency.
