In ArcGIS Desktop, how do I correct a fatal error resulting in automatic shutdown?
If the startup file in ArcGIS Desktop or component applications (e.g., ArcGlobe, ArcScene) is corrupt, a fatal error can occur. Renaming or deleting the existing startup file will often resolve the error. Once the corrupted startup file is removed, ArcGIS will create a new startup file after the application is launched. To remove the startup file:
- Make sure all ArcGIS applications are closed.
- Navigate to the folder containing the startup file for the
component you wish to repair. In Windows Vista, the file is
located in
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\ESRI. In Windows XP, the file is located inC:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ESRI. If you cannot see theApplication Datafolder, open Windows Explorer, and then under theToolsmenu, select the option to display hidden files and folders.Note: If you delete the startup file of an ArcGIS application, you will lose any customizations you made to that application, including VBA code, buttons, options, and settings.
