ARCHIVED: How do I extract ISO image data from the 2005 Indiana Orthophotography dataset?

The state of Indiana provided UITS with a set of CDs and DVDs containing digital high-resolution color orthophotography (natural color and infrared) and elevation data for each county in Indiana. These data are designed to be used with a geographic information system (GIS) and digital mapping software. For more information about the project, see What is the 2005 IndianaMap Orthophotography Project?

For each county's ortho imagery, two image formats are available. TIFF data files for each county are delivered on DVD+R digital media. MrSID data files are delivered on CD-ROM digital media. To allow easy burning of full-county datasets to recordable media, ISO image files of each delivered disk are available from the Indiana Spatial Data Portal.

The data set is in the public domain and has no restrictions on distribution. The state of Indiana asks that you create and place on any media created from this data set the appropriate CD or DVD labels. Credit should be listed as "IndianaMap Framework Data", with links to the IndianaMap. The IndianaMap logo can be used on maps and web sites with the data. You can download labels and logos. The preferred labeling software for this data set is SureThing CD Labeler.

To download and extract data from the 2005 Indiana Orthophotography ISO files:

  1. Open a web browser to one of the following locations:

  2. Locate and download the ISO file for the desired geographic location (Indiana County). These files are extremely large (600MB to 4GB) and may take a while to download, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

  3. Extract images from the ISO file:

    • Option 1: Extract all images on the ISO file by burning a CD or DVD. Use your preferred CD-writing software, such as Nero or Roxio.

Note: Be sure to open the .iso file for burning to media; do not simply add the .iso file as data to be burned. Adding the file as data will save it to the medium, but will not make the medium into a replica CD or DVD image.

    • Option 2: Extract a few images from the ISO file using the Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel.
