At IU, if IUCAT is down, how can I find a book?
If you are trying to find a book in the Indiana University libraries and IUCAT isn't working, you can search WorldCat.
-
At IUB: From the main IUB Libraries page, click
Resource Gateway, and then selectWorldCat. - At other campuses: Go your campus library's home page (see Libraries at Other IU Campuses), and look for a link to WorldCat.
Note: When you access WorldCat via the IU libraries' web sites, you are accessing the subscription version of WorldCat, not WorldCat.org; WorldCat.org does not include call number information.
If you have a specific author or title in mind when searching
WorldCat, you can limit your search to IU Libraries. To do so, on the
front screen of WorldCat, next to "Limit Availability to:", check
Items in my library (IUL, Indiana Univ.) .
When you view the record for an individual book, scroll down until you see "Class Descriptors". This entry may include one or more LC call numbers, which you can use to look for the book in the library stacks. The exact LC call number may vary slightly from library to library, so look in the area around where you would expect the book to be.
Note: WorldCat will not tell you whether a book is checked out or in any other location than on the shelf.
If you need help, ask a librarian. At IUB, you can use the Ask a Librarian service.
