In Windows XP or later, how do I view my LAN Manager Authentication Level setting?

In Windows XP or later, view your LAN Manager Authentication Level setting using the Local Security Policy Console. Access it in one of the following ways:

  • From the Control Panel, through Administrative Tools:

    1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel (Classic View).

    2. Open Administrative Tools, and then Local Security Policy.

  • From the Start menu:

In Windows 7 and Vista, in the Start menu search field, enter secpol.msc .

In Windows XP, from the Start menu, select Run... . In the "Open:" field, enter secpol.msc . Then, click OK.

When the Local Security Policy console appears:

  1. In the pane on the left, look under "Security Settings".

  2. Expand Local Policies, and then select Security Options.

"LAN Manager authentication level" will appear in the list on the right, and the setting should appear in its own column to the right of that. If you cannot see it, double-click LAN Manager authentication level, and a new settings window will open.
