Background

Note:
The ARCHIVED: spam quarantine service analyzes all mail delivered to Indiana University Exchange accounts. Any spam messages you receive are quarantined for five days in a Junk E-Mail folder in your account, and are then deleted automatically.

Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) assigns a Spam Confidence Level (SCL) rating to each email message it analyzes. IMF sends messages that exceed a pre-defined SCL threshold to your Junk E-mail folder.

Note: For Exchange accounts at Indiana University, the spam quarantine service delivers messages with an SCL of 6 or higher to the Junk-Email folder.

In Outlook 2003, you can add the SCL field so you can see the SCL rating for messages in your Junk E-mail folder. To to so, you must first create an Outlook configuration (.cfg) file and install it into your Personal Forms Library. Then, you can use the Field Chooser to drag and drop the SCL field into your Junk E-mail folder.

Creating and installing SCL.CFG

To create and install the SCL.CFG file, follow these steps:

Note: The following instructions include the text of a configuration file published on The Microsoft Exchange Team Blog at:

  1. Copy the following text into a file using the text editor of your choice:

  3. In the Options window, click Other, and then Advanced Options.
  4. In the Advanced Options window, near the bottom, click Custom Forms, and then click Manage Forms.
  5. Click Install....
  6. Browse to the directory where you saved the SCL.CFG file, locate it, and double-click it.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Close, and then click OK several times to back out of the Options menu.

Using the Field Chooser to add the SCL column

With the SCL.CFG file installed, you can now use the Field Chooser to add the SCL field to your Junk E-mail folder. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook, go to your Junk E-mail folder, and then right-click one of the column headers (e.g., From, Subject). Select Field Chooser.
  2. In the Field Chooser window, use the drop-down list to select Forms.
  3. In the subsequent window, use the drop-down list to select Personal Forms.
  4. Click to select SCL Extension Form, click Add, and then click Close.

In the Field Chooser, use the drop-down list to select SCL Extension Form, and then drag and drop the SCL field to the column headers in Junk E-mail.
