At IU, how do I opt out of the spam quarantine service?

If you're going away on vacation, or are otherwise unable to monitor your email account for five days, or if you'd rather not participate in the spam quarantine service at all, you can easily opt out of the service to prevent the system from deleting messages from your quarantine folder. To do so, follow these instructions:

  • Cyrus/Webmail: To opt out, simply change the name of the Spam folder, or delete it. If the service can't find a Spam folder in your account, it automatically sends all filtered messages to your Inbox. To opt back in, change the folder name back to Spam, or (if you deleted it) recreate the Spam folder.

Note: To filter messages properly, the Spam folder must be located directly off your Inbox (i.e., it cannot be a subfolder within another folder in your Inbox). Consequently, another way to opt out of the service (instead of renaming or deleting the folder) is to move it into another folder.

  • Exchange: To opt out, you must log into Outlook Web Access (OWA) and turn off Junk E-mail filtering. To do so, from the Options tab, click Junk E-Mail, and then select the Do not filter junk e-mail button; to reenable filtering, select Automatically filter junk e-mail. Click Save to enact your changes.

Note: Even though filtering is turned off, the spam quarantine service will still continue to purge items that you leave in your Junk E-mail folder for longer than five days.
