At IU, using Outlook 2010 or 2007, how do I access my Exchange mailbox?

To configure Outlook 2010 or 2007 to access your Exchange mailbox at Indiana University, follow the appropriate steps below.

Note: In Windows XP, if you are having problems completing the steps below, you may need to download and install the Indiana University Windows Authentication Update.

Creating a new Exchange profile within Outlook

Note: If you are configuring Outlook from off-campus, first establish a VPN connection.

If you have never run Outlook 2010 or 2007 on your computer, you will need to create a new user profile:

  1. Open Outlook. When prompted to create a new profile, enter a name (such as Exchange) and click OK.

  2. If your computer is joined to IU's ADS domain, Outlook will automatically detect your name and email address (as described in step 4). If your computer is not connected to ADS, fill in your name, IU email address, and IU passphrase; then check the box to manually configure server settings and click Next. Proceed to step 5.

  3. If Outlook automatically detects your account settings, it will display an Auto Account Setup window containing your full name and IU email address. If you click Next, Outlook will finish configuring itself to access your Exchange mailbox, but will not allow you to modify some optional features, such as the ability to turn off Cached Exchange Mode. To manually configure these options, check the box at the bottom of the window before clicking Next, and then proceed to the next step.

  4. Select Microsoft Exchange and then click Next.

  5. For the Microsoft Exchange Server, type ads.iu.edu . In the "User Name:" field, type your IU username. If you wish to disable Cached Exchange Mode, deselect the box.

  6. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Adding an Exchange account in the Control Panel

Note: If you are configuring Outlook from off-campus, first establish a VPN connection.

If you have previously started Outlook 2010 or 2007 and have created a mail profile, you will not be able to add an Exchange account from within Outlook. To add an Exchange account without opening Outlook:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, select either Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel. If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, select Control Panel, and then View 32-bit Control Panel Items.

  2. If you're not already in Classic View, switch to it; for help, see About views in Windows (Start screen/menu, Control Panel).

  3. Double-click the Mail icon.

  4. Click E-mail Accounts.

  5. At the Account Settings window, ensure the E-mail tab is selected, and then click New... .

  6. Fill in your name, IU email address, and IU passphrase. Then check the box to manually configure server settings, and click Next.

  7. Select Microsoft Exchange and click Next.

  8. For the Microsoft Exchange Server, type ads.iu.edu . In the "User Name:" field, type your IU username. If you wish to disable Cached Exchange Mode, deselect the box.

  9. Click Next, and then click Finish.
