For Oncourse, what are the general system and connection requirements?
Oncourse is a web-based application; as long as you have a recent version of a properly configured browser (see To access Oncourse, which web browser should I use?), a fairly recent computer, and at least a 56K connection, you should be able to use Oncourse effectively.
Suggested system requirements
-
Screen resolution: Minimum 1024x768
-
Operating system: Windows 7,
Vista, XP, or 2000; Mac OS
X
Note: WebDAV does not work reliably in Windows Vista; you can use AnyClient as an alternative WebDAV connection method. See Uploading files to Resources or Drop Box using WebDAV with AnyClient.
-
JavaScript: Enabled in browser (all
recommended browsers have JavaScript enabled by default)
-
RAM: Minimum 512KB; 1GB recommended for
faculty/authors/site owners
-
Connection speed: Minimum 56K, DSL or
cable strongly recommended
You must have reliable Internet access (minimum 56K modem) for satisfactory performance. Many courses require high-speed connections for interactive multimedia (e.g., PowerPoint, digital video). These requirements should be stated in the course syllabus. If your connection is slower than a 56K modem, you may experience slow response times.
Other considerations
- Depending on the types of materials used in your course, you may
need additional programs to view and open files (e.g., Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, iTunes, Flash player, Windows
Media player, Quicktime, Shockwave).
- Check with your instructor to determine what software you will
need. Remember that IU students can download many common programs from
IUware.
- Instructors should include any software requirements in the course syllabus.
