Before you begin

Important:

IU's Box cloud storage service was retired on May 10, 2021. For information about cloud storage options available at IU, see Storage at IU.

To access your IU Box account via FTPS, you cannot use your IU passphrase. Instead, you need to create an external password; see ARCHIVED: Create and use an external password for IU Box. When you log into your account, use your full IU email address as the username and your Box external password for the password.

Important:
Box has deprecated WebDAV; see Deprecation: WebDAV Support.

FTPS

To access your IU Box accounts with an FTP client, you must use FTPS (that is, FTP over SSL) and passive FTP. Also, note that SFTP is a different protocol, and is not supported.

Note:
Unencrypted FTP sessions are not permitted and should not be attempted, as they can send your Box credentials in clear text.

UITS recommends using WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck (Windows or macOS) for FTPS with Box. To connect:

WinSCP

  1. Download and install WinSCP.
  2. Connect to Box via FTPS:
    • File protocol: FTPS Implicit encryption
    • Host: ftp.box.com
    • Username: Your primary IU email address
    • Password: Your ARCHIVED: external Box password
    • Port: Use 990

Cyberduck

  1. Download and install Cyberduck.
  2. Connect to Box via FTPS:
    • File protocol: FTP-SSL (Explicit AUTH TLS)
    • Host: ftp.box.com
    • Username: Your primary IU email address
    • Password: Your ARCHIVED: external Box password
    • Port: Use 21
Important:
If you're using Cyberduck in macOS, close the FTP window to Box before closing the application to ensure logout from your session.
