ARCHIVED: What is FSP?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

FSP stands for File Service Protocol. It is a transfer protocol similar to FTP that uses UDP sockets instead of TCP sockets and is "connectionless." It's somewhat slower than FTP, but is designed to create less of a system load than regular FTP would. FSP is specifically designed for anonymous transfers and does not necessarily require root access to install on a system. It has been said that "FSP is what FTP should have been," although as a protocol, it has very little support.

There are currently no FSP servers or clients installed on any UITS systems.

More information about FSP is available in the Usenet newsgroup alt.comp.fsp and in the alt.comp.fsp FAQ file.
