Windows 98 and later

Starting with Windows 98, Windows includes a built-in driver for Zip drives, so all you need to do is physically connect the Zip drive and allow Plug and Play to work.

To install the Zip drive tools from the CD or floppy disk, run setup.exe. If autorun is enabled, setup.exe will automatically start if it's on a CD.

Installing the Zip drive

Connect the Zip drive to your Windows 95 computer using the appropriate method below:

  • If you have an external non-USB Zip drive, plug it into the computer's port (parallel or SCSI) while the computer is turned off, and then turn the computer on. If you have an ATAPI Zip drive, you must open the computer and connect the Zip drive to an open IDE port on your motherboard.
  • If your Zip drive has a USB interface, make sure the computer is turned on before you plug in the Zip drive.

After the Zip drive is connected to your computer, follow the appropriate instructions below:

  • If your Zip drive comes with software on a floppy disk, insert the Zip drive utility diskette into the floppy disk drive. Then click the Start button and click Run.... In the "Open:" field, enter:
       a:guest95
  • Most newer Zip drives ship with a CD instead of a floppy disk. In this case, insert the CD and the utility will automatically start.

You will see a message stating that the Zip drive has been recognized and has been assigned a drive letter. To find the letter assigned to the drive, double-click My Computer. The icon will usually be labeled "Removable Disk" and the drive letter will appear in parentheses, for example:

  Removable Disk (E:)

Installing the Zip drive tools

  1. Insert the Zip utilities cartridge into the Zip drive.
  2. Click Start and select Programs, then Windows Explorer.
  3. From the Windows Explorer window, select the Zip drive. Then click the w95stuff folder.
  4. Double-click setup95.exe (it may appear as setup95). The Zip drive utilities for Windows 95 should begin to install themselves.
