ARCHIVED: What is cyberspace?

Originally, cyberspace was the virtual world of computers first described in cyberpunk genre novels like William Gibson's Neuromancer. The term itself first appeared in Gibson's short story "Burning Chrome". The term "cyberspace", now often regarded as an overused buzzword, has since become synonymous with "the Internet" (although the Internet is a far cry from the immersive virtual reality of the fictional version).

For more information about the fictional version, you can find many cyberpunk-themed web pages. For a listing of many of them, see Yahoo!'s cyberpunk index.
