ARCHIVED: How can I prevent or remove the Microsoft Word Prank Macro (a.k.a. Concept) virus?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

To prevent getting the Prank Macro virus, install Microsoft's Macro Virus Protection Tool (mvtool) or ScanProt. Read what Microsoft has to say at the web site:

  http://www.microsoft.com/word/freestuff/mvtool/virusinfo.htm

Also consider getting a good anti-virus program to install on your computer. At Indiana University, Norton AntiVirus and PC-cillin are available on SoftServe and IUware Online. Norton AntiVirus is also included on the IUware CD. PC-cillin includes a Macro-Shield component, which starts when you run Microsoft Word. If you try to open an infected file, the Macro Shield will stop the macro virus from executing, and it will clean the file.

Note: UITS no longer supports PC-cillin, and you can no longer obtain it via IUware. UITS has replaced PC-cillin with Symantec AntiVirus.
