In Microsoft Word 97, 98, 2000, or 2001, if you have inserted page numbers at the bottom or top of a page and they aren't printing, the page numbers are probably outside the printable area of your printer. If the numbers are in a footer or header, you can raise the footer margin or lower the header margin into the printable area.

To do this, you need to adjust the vertical position of the header or footer:

  1. From the View menu, select Header and Footer.
  2. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Document Layout button (the icon that looks like an open book). Click the Margins tab.
  3. In the "Header:" field, enter the distance you want from the top edge of the page to the top of the header. In the "Footer:" field, enter the distance you want from the bottom edge of the page to the bottom of the footer. Click OK, then close the Header and Footer toolbar, and print again.

If the page numbers still don't show when you print, you may need to increase the distance you entered in step 3.
